Psalm 23:1 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 23:1 introduces one of the best-known prayers in Scripture. David describes the LORD as his shepherd, a picture of close care, guidance, and provision. This verse gives a simple confession of trust: when God leads, there is no need to live in fear or lack.

What happens in Psalm 23:1?

This opening verse sets the tone for the whole psalm by using the image of a shepherd and his sheep. David says that the LORD is his shepherd, showing personal trust rather than a distant belief. The second line states the result of that care: he will not be without what he truly needs. The verse does not promise luxury or ease, but confidence that God provides, protects, and leads with wisdom. It begins a prayer of rest, guidance, and steady faith in God's goodness.

Psalm 23 is a short psalm of David that moves from provision to guidance, protection, and lasting hope. Verse 1 introduces the main image that carries through the whole chapter. The shepherd theme fits the rest of the psalm, where God leads, restores, and stays near even in danger. It is one of the most familiar passages in the Psalms and in all of Scripture.

  • God as ShepherdThe verse uses a shepherd image to show God's personal care, leadership, and protection.
  • Trust and ContentmentDavid speaks with confidence that God's care is enough for his real needs.
  • Dependence on GodThe verse frames faith as relying on the LORD rather than on self-sufficiency.
  • What does it mean to say that the LORD is your shepherd in daily life?
  • How does this verse shape the way you think about needs and provision?

Psalms 23

The LORD Is My Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

1The LORD is my shepherd;

I shall not want.

2He makes me lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside quiet waters.

3He restores my soul;

He guides me in the paths of righteousness

for the sake of His name.

4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil,

for You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6Surely goodness and mercy will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

forever.
