Psalm 23:3 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 23:3 shows the Shepherd caring for the whole person. God not only brings rest, but also renews the inner life and leads his people in the right way. The focus is on his faithful guidance and on living in a manner that reflects his character.

What happens in Psalm 23:3?

In this verse, David describes the Lord as the one who restores what is worn down and directs the life of the one who follows him. The image moves from refreshment to moral guidance: God renews the soul and then leads along righteous paths. The reason given is not human merit, but God's own name and honor. This makes the verse both personal and reverent, showing that divine care includes both healing and direction.

Psalm 23 is a well-known psalm of trust that pictures the Lord as a shepherd who provides, protects, and stays near. The opening verses describe rest and care, while the later verses move into danger and confidence. Verse 3 sits at the center of that pattern, joining inward renewal with steady guidance before the psalm turns toward the valley and beyond.

Psalms 23

The LORD Is My Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

1The LORD is my shepherd;

I shall not want.

2He makes me lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside quiet waters.

3He restores my soul;

He guides me in the paths of righteousness

for the sake of His name.

4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil,

for You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6Surely goodness and mercy will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

forever.
