2 Timothy 1:7 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

2 Timothy 1:7 encourages believers to reject fear and trust the strength God provides. In the middle of Paul's charge to Timothy, this verse points to a steady, Christ-shaped way of living marked by courage, love, and self-control.

What happens in 2 Timothy 1:7?

Paul reminds Timothy that the life God gives is not ruled by fear. Instead, it is marked by power, love, and self-control. This comes in a section where Paul urges Timothy to keep using his gift, not to be ashamed of the gospel, and to be willing to suffer for it. The verse is both comfort and challenge: God supplies what His servants need to stand firm, speak boldly, and live with clear judgment and steady love.

This verse appears near the opening of 2 Timothy, a personal letter where Paul encourages Timothy to remain faithful in difficult days. Paul has just remembered Timothy's sincere faith and urged him to keep stirring up God's gift. Verse 7 leads into a call to courage, gospel witness, and endurance in suffering.

  • Courage from GodGod does not leave His people governed by fear; He gives strength to stay faithful.
  • Love in ActionThe power God gives is meant to be expressed with care, compassion, and concern for others.
  • Clear Self-ControlBelievers are called to live with sound judgment and disciplined hearts, not panic or confusion.
  • What fears might keep someone from speaking or living faithfully for Christ?
  • How do power, love, and self-control belong together in a Christian life?
  • What would it look like to rely on God's help instead of reacting out of fear?

2 Timothy 1

4Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy.5I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced is in you as well.

6For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.7For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.8So do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me, His prisoner. Instead, join me in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.9He has saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works, but by His own purpose and by the grace He granted us in Christ Jesus before time began.10And now He has revealed this grace through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has abolished death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the gospel,
