Ephesians 2:8 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Ephesians 2:8 states the heart of Paul's message in this section: salvation comes by God's grace and is received through faith. It points away from self-achievement and toward God's generous gift, setting the tone for the verses that follow.

What happens in Ephesians 2:8?

In this verse, Paul explains that salvation is not something people can produce on their own. It comes by grace, is received through faith, and does not originate from human effort or merit. The wording makes clear that salvation is God's gift. In the surrounding verses, Paul contrasts this gift with boasting and good works, then shows that believers are created for a new life shaped by God's purpose.

Ephesians 2 begins by describing life apart from Christ and then moves to God's rescue and new life. In verses 5 to 11, Paul highlights grace, faith, and God's work in making believers alive with Christ. Verse 8 sits at the center of that argument, leading into the note that salvation is not earned and into the call to live out good works prepared by God.

  • GraceGod saves by his undeserved kindness rather than by human merit.
  • FaithBelievers receive this gift through trusting response, not self-effort.
  • GiftSalvation is presented as something given by God, leaving no room for boasting.
  • What does this verse teach about the source of salvation?
  • How does grace change the way a person thinks about faith and good works?

Ephesians 2

It is by grace you have been saved!6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,7in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.8For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God,9not by works, so that no one can boast.10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.
