Genesis 1:27 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Genesis 1:27 states a central truth about human identity: people are made by God, bear his image, and include both male and female. This verse shapes how Christians think about dignity, purpose, and relationships.

What happens in Genesis 1:27?

In the sixth-day account, God brings humanity into being with a unique status in creation. The verse repeats the idea that people are made in God's image, emphasizing both origin and worth. It also names male and female together, showing that both share in this calling. The surrounding verses then move from creation to blessing and responsibility, as God gives humanity a role in filling the earth, caring for it, and living under his authority.

This verse comes near the end of the creation account in Genesis 1. It follows the making of land creatures and the announcement of God's intent to create humanity. It leads directly into the blessing and commission in verses 28-30, where people are given fruitful life, stewardship, and provision within God's good world.

  • Image of GodHuman beings have a God-given dignity and value that sets them apart in creation.
  • Male and FemaleBoth men and women are included in God's design and share the same image-bearing worth.
  • StewardshipHumanity is created for responsibility, living under God's rule and caring for his world.
  • What does it mean for people to be made in God's image?
  • How does this verse shape the way we view both men and women?
  • What responsibilities come with being created by God for his world?

Genesis

Genesis 1

The Sixth Day

24And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.25God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”

27So God created man in His own image;

in the image of God He created him;

male and female He created them.

28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.”29Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food.30And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth—everything that has the breath of life in it—I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
