Isaiah 9:6 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Isaiah 9:6 is a well-known promise of hope in the middle of Isaiah's warnings. It speaks of a child whose coming brings leadership, peace, and lasting rule. Christians often read this verse as pointing forward to the Messiah.

What happens in Isaiah 9:6?

This verse announces the birth of a child and the giving of a son to God's people. The child will carry the weight of rule and bear names that describe wisdom, power, lasting care, and peace. In the surrounding verses, this promise follows a picture of oppression being broken and warfare ending. The focus is not just on a future ruler, but on a reign marked by justice, stability, and God's own commitment to bring it about.

Isaiah 9 comes after earlier judgment language in the book, but here the tone shifts toward hope and restoration. The surrounding section contrasts darkness, oppression, and war with a coming ruler whose kingdom will grow in peace. This verse sits near the center of a larger promise about David's throne and God's steady purpose for His people.

  • Promise of a ChildThe verse points to a coming child whose arrival changes the future for God's people.
  • Divine KingshipThe titles given to the child show authority, wisdom, and a rule that belongs to God alone.
  • Peace and JusticeHis government is described as lasting, righteous, and marked by peace rather than conflict.
  • What does it mean that the child is given and will carry the government on his shoulders?
  • How do the titles in this verse shape your understanding of the coming ruler?
  • What difference does it make to read this promise in the midst of hardship and conflict?

Isaiah 9

3You have enlarged the nation

and increased its joy.

The people rejoice before You

as they rejoice at harvest time,

as men rejoice in dividing the plunder.

4For as in the day of Midian

You have shattered the yoke of their burden,

the bar across their shoulders,

and the rod of their oppressor.

5For every trampling boot of battle

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel for the fire.

6For unto us a child is born,

unto us a son is given,

and the government will be upon His shoulders.

And He will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7Of the increase of His government and peace

there will be no end.

He will reign on the throne of David

and over his kingdom,

to establish and sustain it

with justice and righteousness

from that time and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

Judgment against Israel’s Pride

8The Lord has sent a message against Jacob,

and it has fallen upon Israel.

9All the people will know it—

Ephraim and the dwellers of Samaria.

With pride and arrogance of heart

they will say:
