John 14:27 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

In John 14:27, Jesus speaks comfort to his disciples before his departure. He promises a kind of peace that is different from what the world offers and tells them not to live in fear or anxiety.

What happens in John 14:27?

Jesus tells his disciples that he is leaving them peace, and that the peace he gives is not shaped by the world. His words come in the middle of farewell teaching, where he prepares them for his departure and for what will follow. Rather than letting their hearts stay troubled, he calls them to trust. The verse ties his comfort to his larger purpose: the coming help of the Holy Spirit, his return to the Father, and the certainty that his words will stand.

This verse sits in Jesus' farewell discourse in John 14, where he prepares his disciples for his death, return to the Father, and continued care through the Holy Spirit. It follows his teaching about loving obedience and the Spirit's role, and it leads into reassurance about his going away and what will soon happen.

  • Peace from JesusJesus gives peace as a gift, not as something disciples must produce for themselves.
  • Trust over fearHis command not to be troubled points believers toward calm confidence in him.
  • Hope in farewellThe verse speaks comfort in a moment of loss and uncertainty, anchored in what Jesus is about to do.
  • What is different about the peace Jesus gives compared with the world's peace?
  • How does this verse speak to fear or trouble in a believer's life?
  • Why does Jesus link peace with his departure and what comes next?

John 14

24Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. The word that you hear is not My own, but it is from the Father who sent Me.

25All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you.26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Peace I Leave with You

27Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.28You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.29And now I have told you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe.30I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming, and he has no claim on Me.
