Joshua 1:9 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Joshua 1:9 speaks into a moment of transition and responsibility. God calls Joshua to lead with courage, not fear, because the Lord Himself will be with him in every place and task ahead. This verse is often read for strength in uncertain seasons.

What happens in Joshua 1:9?

In this verse, the Lord reinforces the charge already given to Joshua. He is told to be strong and courageous, not to give in to fear or discouragement. The reason is not Joshua's own ability, but God's faithful presence with him wherever he goes. In the surrounding verses, this command is tied to obedience to God's law and to the task of leading Israel into the land. The verse combines encouragement, duty, and assurance in a single promise.

Joshua 1 begins after Moses' death, with Joshua taking leadership of Israel. In verses 6-12, God prepares him for the task ahead: leading the people across the Jordan and into the land promised to their ancestors. Verse 9 sits at the center of this commissioning, joining courage with obedience and God's presence.

  • CourageGod calls Joshua to face a hard assignment with steady trust instead of fear.
  • God's presenceThe promise is grounded in the Lord's nearness, not in Joshua's own strength.
  • Obedient leadershipJoshua's courage is connected to following God's instruction as he leads the people.
  • What changes when courage is based on God's presence rather than personal confidence?
  • How do the commands in Joshua 1:6-8 help explain Joshua 1:9?
  • Where do you most need the encouragement to not be afraid or discouraged?

Be careful to observe all the law that My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may prosper wherever you go.8This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do.9Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua Takes Charge

10Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people:11“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’”

12But to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said,
