What happens in Psalm 1:1?
This verse begins the Psalms by describing a person who avoids three stages of evil influence: following bad counsel, joining a sinful way of life, and settling into scornful habits. The focus is not only on actions but on the direction of the heart and the company a person keeps. The opening line leads directly into the rest of the psalm, where delight in God's instruction is shown as the better path and the source of lasting fruitfulness.
Psalm 1 stands at the doorway to the whole Psalter and introduces one of its main themes: the contrast between the righteous and the wicked. It belongs to Book I of the Psalms and sets out the moral shape of the life of faith before moving into the praise, prayer, and lament that follow.
