Psalm 1:1 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 1:1 introduces the first psalm with a clear picture of two paths. It warns against being shaped by sinful influence and sets up the contrast between the life that is blessed and the life that is not.

What happens in Psalm 1:1?

This verse begins the Psalms by describing a person who avoids three stages of evil influence: following bad counsel, joining a sinful way of life, and settling into scornful habits. The focus is not only on actions but on the direction of the heart and the company a person keeps. The opening line leads directly into the rest of the psalm, where delight in God's instruction is shown as the better path and the source of lasting fruitfulness.

Psalm 1 stands at the doorway to the whole Psalter and introduces one of its main themes: the contrast between the righteous and the wicked. It belongs to Book I of the Psalms and sets out the moral shape of the life of faith before moving into the praise, prayer, and lament that follow.

  • Two pathsThe verse contrasts a life shaped by godly wisdom with a life shaped by sin and mockery.
  • InfluenceIt warns that counsel, habits, and companions can slowly shape a person's direction.
  • BlessingTrue blessing is linked to refusing evil ways and moving toward God's way of life.
  • What kinds of voices or influences does this verse warn against?
  • How do the three actions in this verse show a gradual drift from caution to commitment?
  • What would it look like today to choose the path of blessing described here?

Psalms 1

BOOK I

The Two Paths

1Blessed is the man

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

or set foot on the path of sinners,

or sit in the seat of mockers.

2But his delight is in the Law of the LORD,

and on His law he meditates day and night.

3He is like a tree planted by streams of water,

yielding its fruit in season,

whose leaf does not wither,

and who prospers in all he does.

4Not so the wicked!

For they are like chaff driven off by the wind.

5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6For the LORD guards the path of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.
