Psalm 1:6 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 1:6 closes the psalm with a clear contrast between two paths. It shows God's care over the righteous and warns that a life turned away from him does not last. This verse sums up the psalm's opening message about wisdom, obedience, and lasting direction.

What happens in Psalm 1:6?

This verse states the outcome of the two ways described in Psalm 1. The Lord watches over and protects the path of the righteous. By contrast, the way of the wicked comes to ruin and does not endure. The verse brings the psalm's opening section to a sharp conclusion, showing that a life rooted in God's instruction leads somewhere secure, while a life opposed to him ends in loss.

Psalm 1 opens Book I of the Psalms and presents a wisdom-style introduction to the whole collection. It contrasts the life of the righteous with the life of the wicked, using images of a fruitful tree and blown-away chaff. Verse 6 provides the final summary, stating the different destinies that belong to each path.

  • God's careThe Lord actively guards the path of those who walk in righteousness.
  • Two outcomesThe psalm sets one path toward lasting life and another toward ruin.
  • Moral directionChoices and loyalties shape the route a person takes before God.
  • What does it mean for the Lord to guard the path of the righteous?
  • How does this verse complete the contrast between the two ways in Psalm 1?
  • What does the warning about the way of the wicked teach about the result of ungodly living?

Psalms 1

BOOK I

The Two Paths

1Blessed is the man

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

or set foot on the path of sinners,

or sit in the seat of mockers.

2But his delight is in the Law of the LORD,

and on His law he meditates day and night.

3He is like a tree planted by streams of water,

yielding its fruit in season,

whose leaf does not wither,

and who prospers in all he does.

4Not so the wicked!

For they are like chaff driven off by the wind.

5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6For the LORD guards the path of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.
