Psalm 121:1 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 121:1 opens with a personal question about where help is found. It begins a short pilgrimage song that moves from looking at the hills to trusting the Lord, who is able to protect and sustain His people.

What happens in Psalm 121:1?

The verse shows the speaker looking up toward the hills and asking where real help will come from. It is the first line of a song of ascents, setting up a response that follows in the rest of the psalm. The question is not answered by the scenery itself, but by the trust that help comes from the Lord, the Creator. The rest of the psalm builds on that confidence with promises of watchful care, steady protection, and continual guarding.

Psalm 121 is part of the Songs of Ascents, a collection used by worshipers traveling up to Jerusalem. This verse begins a psalm that answers anxiety with trust, moving quickly from a question to a declaration of God's care. It fits within a larger section of Psalms that often gives language for prayer, worship, and reliance on the Lord.

  • Help from GodThe psalm starts by asking where true help is found and points the reader toward the Lord.
  • Trust in the CreatorHelp is grounded in the Lord's power as the maker of heaven and earth.
  • Pilgrim confidenceThe opening line fits a worship journey, where God's people look beyond what they see and depend on Him.
  • What does the question in Psalm 121:1 reveal about the speaker's need?
  • Why is it important that the rest of the psalm points to the Lord as Creator?
  • When do you tend to look for help in visible things instead of turning to God?

Psalms 121

I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills

A song of ascents.

1I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

2My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip;

your Protector will not slumber.

4Behold, the Protector of Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is your keeper;

the LORD is the shade on your right hand.

6The sun will not strike you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7The LORD will guard you from all evil;

He will preserve your soul.

8The LORD will watch over your coming and going,

both now and forevermore.
