Psalm 121:2 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 121:2 answers the question of where real help comes from. In a psalm of trust, it points beyond human strength and changing circumstances to the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, as the true source of aid and safety.

What happens in Psalm 121:2?

This verse gives the answer to the psalmist's searching question about help. The response is clear and confident: help comes from the LORD, who created everything. In the verses around it, that truth leads into promises of God's watchful care, protection from harm, and steady attention day and night. The focus is not on the hills themselves or on human support, but on the Lord's power, authority, and faithful presence. The verse invites trust in God as the one who is both strong enough to help and near enough to guard.

Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascents, likely used by worshipers traveling up to Jerusalem. It begins with a question about where help comes from and then answers it with confidence in the Lord. The rest of the psalm expands that answer into assurance of God's protection over daily life, travel, and all seasons.

  • God as HelperThe verse teaches that true help comes from the Lord rather than from human strength or uncertain sources.
  • Creator's PowerCalling God the Maker of heaven and earth emphasizes his authority over all things and his ability to act.
  • Trust in ProtectionThe verse prepares the reader for the psalm's larger promise that God watches over his people with care.
  • Where do I usually look for help first, and how does this verse redirect my trust?
  • What does it mean for God to be the Maker of heaven and earth in my current situation?
  • How does this verse shape the way I think about God's care for me today?

Psalms 121

I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills

A song of ascents.

1I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

2My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip;

your Protector will not slumber.

4Behold, the Protector of Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is your keeper;

the LORD is the shade on your right hand.

6The sun will not strike you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7The LORD will guard you from all evil;

He will preserve your soul.

8The LORD will watch over your coming and going,

both now and forevermore.
