What happens in Psalm 121:4?

This verse comes as part of a song of ascent that answers the question of where help comes from. After declaring that help comes from the Lord, the psalm shifts to God's active care. The focus here is simple and reassuring: the Protector of Israel is always awake. He does not become weary, distracted, or unavailable. In the flow of the psalm, this truth supports the promise that God guards, keeps, and watches over his people at all times.

Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascents, a group of psalms linked with pilgrimage and worship journeying toward Jerusalem. It opens with the worshiper looking to the hills and asking where help will come from. Verse 4 builds on the earlier lines by naming the Lord as the one who keeps Israel safe with constant attention.

  • Trust in protectionIt calls readers to rest in the Lord as the one who guards his people.
  • Steady assuranceThe line gives calm confidence that God's watchfulness does not fail.

Psalms 121

I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills

A song of ascents.

1I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

2My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip;

your Protector will not slumber.

4Behold, the Protector of Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is your keeper;

the LORD is the shade on your right hand.

6The sun will not strike you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7The LORD will guard you from all evil;

He will preserve your soul.

8The LORD will watch over your coming and going,

both now and forevermore.
