Psalm 121:5 gives a simple promise of God's personal care. The LORD is presented as a keeper who stays near, protects, and provides shade on your right hand. In a psalm about help and safety, this verse centers trust in God's faithful presence.

What happens in Psalm 121:5?

This verse states that the LORD is the keeper of His people. It also pictures Him as shade on the right hand, a sign of close, practical protection in everyday life. In the flow of Psalm 121, this follows the confession that help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth and the assurance that He does not sleep. The verse adds warmth and nearness to the psalm's theme of divine guarding. It tells readers that God's care is not distant but active and personal.

Psalm 121 is a song of ascents, part of a group of psalms linked with travel and worship. It begins with a question about where help comes from and answers that help comes from the LORD. Verse 5 sits in the middle of that assurance, between God's constant watchfulness and His promise to guard every step.

  • God's protectionThe verse presents the LORD as a keeper who actively guards His people.
  • Divine nearnessThe image of shade on the right hand shows God's care as close and immediate.

Psalms 121

I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills

A song of ascents.

1I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

2My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip;

your Protector will not slumber.

4Behold, the Protector of Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is your keeper;

the LORD is the shade on your right hand.

6The sun will not strike you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7The LORD will guard you from all evil;

He will preserve your soul.

8The LORD will watch over your coming and going,

both now and forevermore.
