Psalm 121:6 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 121:6 continues a song of trust in the Lord's protection. It pictures safety in broad daylight and through the night, using familiar images to show that God's care covers every time and condition.

What happens in Psalm 121:6?

This verse says the sun will not strike by day and the moon will not harm by night. In the flow of the psalm, it is part of a larger promise that the Lord keeps watch over his people without resting. The language is simple and strong: danger is real, but God's protection is greater. The verse does not explain how every hardship will be avoided, but it does affirm steady divine guarding in all seasons and at all hours.

Psalm 121 is a song of ascents, likely used by pilgrims traveling toward Jerusalem. It follows the opening confession that help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Verse 6 sits in the center of a passage that builds assurance by repeating that the Lord protects, keeps, and watches over his people.

  • God's protectionThe verse presents the Lord as one who shields his people from harm.
  • Day and night careThe reference to sun and moon shows protection that covers every hour.
  • Trust in pilgrimageFor travelers and worshipers, the verse offers confidence on an uncertain journey.
  • What does this verse teach about the kind of protection the Lord gives?
  • How does the contrast between day and night strengthen the promise here?
  • Where do you most need to trust God's care right now?

Psalms 121

I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills

A song of ascents.

1I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

2My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip;

your Protector will not slumber.

4Behold, the Protector of Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is your keeper;

the LORD is the shade on your right hand.

6The sun will not strike you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7The LORD will guard you from all evil;

He will preserve your soul.

8The LORD will watch over your coming and going,

both now and forevermore.
