Psalm 91:2 Bible Verse: Text, Meaning, and Context

Psalm 91:2 is a short confession of trust. It names the Lord as refuge and fortress and shows the speaker choosing confidence in God for safety and help. This verse is often read on its own, but it also fits the larger picture of shelter in Psalm 91.

What happens in Psalm 91:2?

In this verse, the speaker speaks directly to the Lord and declares personal trust. God is described as a refuge and a fortress, images that point to protection, security, and strength. The verse is not just about knowing true things about God; it is about saying them out loud in faith. Read with the verses around it, this confession leads into promises of deliverance, covering, and freedom from fear.

Psalm 91 opens with a focus on God as a place of shelter for those who dwell near Him. Verse 2 follows that opening by shifting from general truth to personal trust. It sets up the promises in the rest of the psalm, which describe God's care, protection, and faithfulness in times of danger.

Psalms 91

You Are My Refuge and My Fortress

1He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High

will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

2I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress,

my God, in whom I trust.”

3Surely He will deliver you

from the snare of the fowler,

and from the deadly plague.

4He will cover you with His feathers;

under His wings you will find refuge;

His faithfulness is a shield and rampart.

5You will not fear the terror of the night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,
