What happens in Psalms 149?

The psalm opens with a call for God's people to sing a new song and praise him together. Israel is told to rejoice in the one who made them and rules as their King. Worship includes dancing, instruments, and public praise. The chapter then highlights God's care for his people, especially the humble and afflicted, and says he gives them salvation. It closes with a solemn picture of God bringing judgment through his saints, ending in praise to the Lord.

This is the final section of Psalms 149 and comes near the end of the whole Psalter, just before the closing burst of praise in Psalms 150. It continues the theme of God's kingship over his people and the call for communal worship. Sing to the LORD a New Song

1Hallelujah!

Sing to the LORD a new song—

His praise in the assembly of the godly.

2Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;

let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.

3Let them praise His name with dancing,

and make music to Him with tambourine and harp.

4For the LORD takes pleasure in His people;

He adorns the afflicted with salvation.

5Let the saints exult in glory;

let them shout for joy upon their beds.

6May the high praises of God be in their mouths,

and a double-edged sword in their hands,

7to inflict vengeance on the nations

and punishment on the peoples,

8to bind their kings with chains

and their nobles with shackles of iron,

9to execute the judgment written against them.

This honor is for all His saints.
