Leviticus 12 Summary, Context, and Full Chapter

Leviticus 12 gives instructions for a woman after childbirth, including a period of ceremonial uncleanness, a time of purification, and offerings brought to the priest. It also makes provision for those who cannot afford a lamb, showing that cleansing before God remained accessible.

What happens in Leviticus 12?

This chapter sets out the process for purification after the birth of a child. A woman who gives birth to a son is ceremonially unclean for seven days, followed by a further period of purification. For a daughter, the uncleanness and purification periods are longer. After the appointed days, the woman brings a burnt offering and a sin offering to the Tent of Meeting, where the priest makes atonement for her. If she cannot afford a lamb, the law allows two birds instead, providing a cheaper offering for cleansing.

Leviticus 12 follows laws about clean and unclean living in Israel and comes before the chapter on skin diseases. It belongs to the section where God gives Moses instructions for holy living, with practical rules for worship, purity, and access to the sanctuary. The chapter continues the book's concern for Israel's life before a holy God.

  • Ceremonial purityThe chapter regulates a time of uncleanness and later cleansing after childbirth.
  • Worship and atonementOfferings are brought so the priest can make atonement and declare the woman clean.
  • Provision for the poorThe law allows a less costly sacrifice when a family cannot afford a lamb.
  • Why does the chapter distinguish between the days after the birth of a son and a daughter?
  • What do the offerings at the Tent of Meeting show about cleansing and atonement?
  • How does the option of two birds reflect God's concern for people with limited means?

Leviticus 12

Purification after Childbirth

1Then the LORD said to Moses,2“Say to the Israelites, ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be unclean for seven days, as she is during the days of her menstruation.3And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin is to be circumcised.4The woman shall continue in purification from her bleeding for thirty-three days. She must not touch anything sacred or go into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are complete.5If, however, she gives birth to a daughter, the woman will be unclean for two weeks as she is during her menstruation. Then she must continue in purification from her bleeding for sixty-six days.

6When the days of her purification are complete, whether for a son or for a daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering.7And the priest will present them before the LORD and make atonement for her; and she shall be ceremonially cleansed from her flow of blood. This is the law for a woman giving birth, whether to a male or to a female.8But if she cannot afford a lamb, she shall bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. Then the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”
